The Madness

where has the madness gone
that walked the cold nights, in long coats
that burned our lives, then left them cold
that made us both cowardly and courageous
and allowed us to speak of what could not be said

where has the madness gone
for what fine end was it embraced
what ideals sacrificed at its split and tilted altar
what limits ignored, crossed, and left far behind

where has the madness gone
that gifted you finally your sanity
that made you the pearl of greatest price
and all others merely gems that shine but have no depth

where has the madness gone
and where must I go to find it again
